  The Deepwater Horizon was an offshore drilling rig BP (British Petroleum) operated in the Gulf of Mexico. On April 20, 2010, an explosion and subsequent fire at the rig resulted in the deaths of 11 workers and injured many others. When high pressure in an oil well causes oil and gas to surge to the surface, a blowout causes the explosion. One of the worst environmental disasters in US history was this blowout's Gulf of Mexico oil leak. The oil leak released 4.9 million barrels into the Gulf of Mexico over three months.
